Saving Water and Energy for Fun & Profit

We all know that California is facing a major drought situation1. Energy prices have been increasing for a long time, and are expected to continue to do so. None of that is news.

But there’s a way you can save money, save resources and demonstrate your commitment to more sustainable living. While earning kudos for San Carlos on the national stage. Now that’s news!

Here’s how. Take part in the Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, sponsored by the Wyland Foundation and Toyota. Supported by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Water, the National League of Cities, the U.S. Forest Service, and others, it’s a fun water use, energy use, and pollution reduction competition between cities. If San Carlos comes out on top, residents who take the pledge will be eligible for a number of cool prizes, including a grand prize, a Toyota Prius Plug-in2.

You can learn more about the contest rules and how to sign up at http://www.wylandfoundation.org/mywaterpledge/ (the official rules, and the contest privacy policy, is available here). Check it out!

Let’s show the nation how environmentally-conscious San Carlos really is!

As of 8:25 PM on Wednesday evening we’re currently ranked #6 in the nation among cities in our size category.

When I signed up the “Pledge via Facebook” button didn’t seem to work. But the “Pledge via Email” button worked just fine.

1 Don’t be mislead by whatever rain you see outside your window. It’s too little and too late to make much practical difference.

2 To participate in the prize drawing you have to provide your contact information, including your address, email and a phone number. My brief review of Wyland’s privacy policy shows that by providing the contact information you are agreeing to let them update you on their programs, and the programs of their non-profit partners. I think that’s reasonable, but your mileage may vary.
