One of the, if not unique, certainly unusual aspects of my City Council campaign was the degree to which my team and I pounded the pavement reaching out to voters. All told, we knocked on 5,538 doors, covering about 86% of our wonderful small town. Not everyone was home when we came calling, but we ended up having 2,309 conversations with San Carlans on their doorsteps. For me personally the final tallies were 3,331 doorbells and 1,498 conversations.

The map at the top of this post shows every home we visited, color-coded by which member of the team made the contact. You can click on it to see a larger version.

The First Step

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. - Lao Tzu

This past Monday evening I officially joined the San Carlos City Council, capping an intense, but exhilarating campaign season. Now the real work begins! I’m excited about getting started, and looking forward to working with my neighbors and my new colleagues to make San Carlos an even better community than it already is. Thanks to all of you who helped me during the election, and thanks to everyone who took the time to vote!

Regarding Monday’s ceremony, I was particularly pleased that the Council took the time to honor outgoing Council members Brad Lewis and Randy Royce. Both deserve kudos for serving our community during these challenging times.

Elections are about giving voters choices, but that can’t happen unless candidates are willing to step forward and subject themselves to scrutiny by their neighbors. That’s harder to do than most people realize. Regardless of what we may think of individual candidates, we should be glad that San Carlos has people who are willing to put themselves out there.

You can read the remarks I made upon joining the Council here.
